Define the output
If the operator needs the exact printed lot number, the task is text extraction plus format validation. If the task is finding a missing cap, it is object detection or classification. If the task is explaining a varied scene in natural language, a vision-language model may help. Write the required fields, accepted character set, location, confidence handling, and downstream action before selecting a tool. A general answer that sounds plausible is not a substitute for an exact traceable code.
Find before reading
OCR systems read text from an image; a fixed camera may still need a detector or geometric crop to isolate the correct label. When several codes appear, assign which region is authoritative before recognition. Azure's Read model documents text extraction and layout information, while OpenCV thresholding illustrates image preprocessing options. Do not assume thresholding always helps: uneven illumination and reflective packaging can destroy faint characters. Compare raw and prepared images on the same labeled sample.
Choose evidence by task
For a missing component, draw a bounding box or segmentation mask around the candidate and compare it with the expected assembly. For a printed date, return the crop and exact characters with a format check. For a variable maintenance photo, a vision-language model can draft an explanation, but factual claims should be checked against the image and a known procedure before action. Keep the original crop and model version with every automated decision so a reviewer can reproduce what was seen.
Measure the right error
OCR needs character and field-level error rates, especially for easily confused symbols such as O and 0. Detection needs missed-object and false-object rates at the position tolerance that the line accepts. Scene explanation needs task-specific factual review rather than a single generic accuracy number. Build a test set from blur, glare, rotation, print wear, and packaging variants. Report the cost of a wrong acceptance separately from the cost of a manual review.
Compose only what is needed
A practical flow might locate the label, read its text, check a checksum or product-specific pattern, and route low-confidence cases to a person. Another task may need only one detector. Add a vision-language model when open-ended visual interpretation truly matters and its output can be reviewed. Prototype the smallest flow against representative images, latency limits, and audit requirements. The architecture is a sequence of verifiable steps, not a contest to use the most capable model everywhere. For a pilot, keep the original images, the operating conditions, and every reviewer correction together. Compare the proposed decision with the current line process before expanding to another product or shift.
